GACTA Activities

2004

  1. August, 2004: The Gainesville Area Community Tennis Association (GACTA) was formed.
  2. December, 2004: First Board of Directors meeting held.

2005

  1. Website (www.gainesvilletennis.com) was created.
  2. Organized a 25-Year Anniversary Celebration of USTA League Tennis
  3. Organized tennis social mixers for Gainesville area tennis players.
  4. Organized a Gainesville Corporate Tennis League for the business community
  5. Worked with Tennis Channel and USTA Florida to offer the Bobby Curtis Tennis on the Move program. A Kid’s Carnival Day was held at UF varsity courts to over 100 children.
  6. Worked with the 300 Club to sponsor a charity tennis tournament to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
  7. Supported development of the Jonesville Tennis Center

2006

  1. Continued maintenance of the website
  2. Continued support of USTA League Tennis
  3. Continued support of Corporate Tennis League
  4. Developed a GACTA Tennis Ladder Program
  5. Supported a Recreational Coaches Workshop
  6. Implemented a Junior Team Tennis Program
  7. Supported the Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County by donating $5000 for tennis court renovations.
  8. Supported development of Jonesville Tennis Center

2007

  1. Continued maintenance of website
  2. Continued support of USTA League Tennis programs
  3. Continued work on GACTA Tennis Ladder
  4. Continued development of a Junior Team Tennis program
  5. Supported development of the Jonesville Tennis Center

2008

  1. Continued maintenance of website
  2. Continued support of USTA League programs (another record year with 865 unique players and 2486 registrations)
  3. Continued support of GACTA Tennis Ladder
  4. Continued support of the growing Junior Team Tennis program
  5. Opening of newly renovated courts at Boys and Girls Club
  6. GACTA supports construction of Jonesville Tennis Center
  7. Development of a weekly after-school program for at-risk children in partnership with the SE Boys and Girls Club.
  8. Exploration of introducing tennis to local Special Olympics group.
  9. Held a “Doubles for Dummies” seminar in March at DB, organized by Becky Bates.
  10. GACTA Board approved a $15,000 donation to the Jonesville Tennis Center project, as completion of these courts was essential to the continued growth of tennis in the area.
  11. GACTA program support was made possible by USTA League fees donated by Lee Johnson and Christine Shurleff.
  12. GACTA continues to advocate for the Jonesville Tennis Center.
  13. Christine Shurtleff won Female Merit Award at the USTA Florida annual meeting.

2009

  1. Obtained 501(c)(3) status effective July, 2009, thanks to Lee Johnson
  2. Continued support of Junior Team Tennis. One Jr. Team Tennis team traveled to Nationals.
  3. Jonesville Tennis Center opened 5/9/2009, after years of advocacy by GACTA members.
  4. Pilot EDEP tennis program supported at three elementary schools.
  5. Pilot Jr. Competitive Mentoring program supported.
  6. JTC Fundraising Tournament: JTC donated $2000 for community programming.
  7. Quickstart Tennis coaching workshop held at Westside Park 3/7/2009.
  8. USTA Recreational Tennis Grant awarded ($6250) for expansion of after-school tennis program.
  9. Anne Koterba received CTA Volunteer of the Year award at the USTA Florida annual meeting.

2010

  1. Received USTA Florida Share the Love grant for continuation of EDEP tennis program.
  2. Acquired Alachua County Choices program to assist in offering tennis as an after-school activity in all county elementary schools.
  3. Conducted well-attended Quickstart coaching workshop at JTC.
  4. Supported Adaptive Tennis open houses at JTC
  5. Exploring the possibilities of offering a middle school tennis program.
  6. JTC wins Member Organization of the Year at the USTA Florida Annual Meeting
  7. Linda Green wins Jr. Team Tennis Local League Coordinator of the Year at the USTA Florida Annual Meeting.
